Weighted grades can be confusing. This guide explains exactly how weighted grade systems work and how to calculate your final grade.
Weighted grades are used when different assignments or categories count for different portions of your final grade. For example, homework might be worth 20%, quizzes 30%, and exams 50%.
Weighted Grade = Σ (Category Grade × Category Weight)
Where all weights must add up to 100%.
Suppose your class has:
Weighted Grade = (90 × 0.20) + (85 × 0.30) + (78 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.30)
= 18 + 25.5 + 15.6 + 26.4 = 85.5%
Understanding your weighted grade helps you prioritize where to focus your study time. If exams are worth 50% of your grade, investing more time in exam preparation yields higher returns than spending all your time on homework.
